Gas Pipeline Construction Camp – 650 People

A 22-month meal service for the workers' camp of a 142 km natural gas pipeline project in Eastern Anatolia. Four container kitchens were set up at the camp centre: hot kitchen, cold room, preparation and dishwashing. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and night meals were planned separately according to workers' shifts.

Challenges

Because of temperatures reaching −24 °C in winter, supply being run from 320 km away and power cuts, we installed a generator and a dual-line cold store. Weekly fresh produce was shipped in refrigerated vehicles.

Results

• Work lost due to food: 0
• Worker satisfaction: 4.3 / 5
• The iftar–suhoor arrangement during Ramadan ran without problems

Lessons learned

As supply times lengthen in cold climates, dry goods stock was planned for at least 14 days. A dual-line cold store and a generator backup prevented a single fault from interrupting the meal service.
